American Sign Language (ASL) Assessment for World Language Teachers of ASL (Subtests I & II) (050/051)

The ASL Assessment includes two subtests. Candidates must take and pass both subtests to qualify for an Ohio license in this field. If you are taking both subtests, you must complete a separate registration for Subtest I and for Subtest II.

Format Computer-based test (CBT);
  • Subtest I: 50 multiple-choice questions
  • Subtest II: 50 multiple-choice questions and 4 constructed-response assignments (4 expressive production video-recordings)
Time Subtest I: 1 hour and 30 minutes total appointment time
  • 15 minutes for CBT tutorial and nondisclosure agreement
  • 1 hour, 15 minutes testing time
Subtest II: 2 hours and 30 minutes total appointment time
  • 15 minutes for CBT tutorial and nondisclosure agreement
  • 2 hours, 15 minutes testing time
Assessment Dates
  • Subtest I: By appointment, year round. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Find a test center and see real-time seat availability opens in a new window..
  • Subtest II: By appointment during testing windows. Each testing window has a deadline by which you must schedule your appointment. Review the testing windows and scheduling deadlines.
Assessment Sites
  • Subtest I: CBT sites are located throughout Ohio and nationwide. Find a test center and see real-time seat availability opens in a new window..
  • Subtest II: This assessment is offered at select test centers.
    You must schedule your test appointment by calling the phone number provided in the confirmation email that you will receive after registering. Follow all instructions in the confirmation email carefully to ensure proper scheduling.
Passing Score Subtest I: 220
Subtest II: Until a new passing standard is approved by the State Board of Education of Ohio, candidates will earn a status of "Pass" or "Did Not Pass" based on meeting both of the following examination participation requirements:
  • Correctly respond to a minimum of 33% of the multiple-choice questions.
  • Provide complete responses to each of the four constructed-response questions. Responses must be in American Sign Language, address the specific requirements of the question(s), and be of sufficient length to respond to the questions.
